These are the "ones brought near" (Al-Muqarrabun); the servants closest to Allah. 12. They shall dwell in Gardens of Delight. 13. A large number of them from the former generations, 14. And a few from the later generations! 15. They will recline on thrones woven with gold and precious stones, lined up side by side. 16. There, they shall sit facing one another with mutual affection. 17. They will be served by youths of perpetual freshness who never age; 18. With goblets, ewers, and cups filled from flowing springs... 19. From which they will suffer neither headache nor intoxication. 20. With various fruits of their own choosing... 21. And the flesh of fowls that they may desire... 22. And there will be fair maidens with wide, lovely eyes; 23. Like pearls hidden in their shells! 24. As a reward for the good deeds they used to do in the world. 25. There they shall hear neither vain, meaningless talk nor any word leading to sin. 26. They shall hear only the greeting: "Peace be unto you, O people of Paradise, peace!" 27. The "people of the right"; how fortunate and happy are the "people of the right!" 28. They shall be among thornless, fruit-laden lote-trees, 29. And clustered bananas, 30. And extended, spreading shade, 31. And water flowing constantly, 32. Amidst abundant fruits. 33. Which are never ending, nor are they ever forbidden. 34. They shall recline with their spouses on raised couches. 35. Indeed, We have created the women of Paradise in a new creation. 36. We have made them forever virgins. 37. Loving and devoted to their spouses, and always of the same age. 38. All this is for the "people of the right." 39. Many of them are from the former generations; 40. And many are from the later generations! 41. The "people of the left"; how unfortunate and wretched are the "people of the left!" 42. They shall be in the midst of a scorching fire that penetrates the marrow and boiling water. 43. Under the shadow of black smoke. 44. A shadow that gives no coolness and serves no good. 45. For they, in the world, lived in luxury and indulgence without any moral concern. 46. They persisted in committing the greatest sin. 47. And they used to say: "Is it really true that when we have died and become dust and a heap of bones, that we shall be resurrected in a new creation? This is impossible!" 48. "And our forefathers of old too?" 49. Say: "Both those of old who have passed away, and you, and those who come after you;" 50. "All of you shall surely be gathered together at the appointed time of a known Day!" 51. Then you, O you who have gone astray and denied the truth! 52. You shall surely eat from the fruit of the Zaqqum tree. 53. You will eat and fill your bellies with it. 54. And drink boiling water on top of it. 55. Drinking it like the frantic drinking of camels suffering from insatiable thirst. 56. This is the "welcome" they shall receive on the Day of Reckoning! 57. It is We who created you from nothing. Why, then, do you not believe in the truth of the resurrection? 58. Have you considered the seed (semen) that you emit into the wombs? 59. Is it you who create it into a perfect human being, or are We the Creator? 60. It is We who have ordained death among you within a fixed plan. No power can prevent Us from causing you to die. 61. Or from replacing you with other generations like you, and bringing you forth in a world and a form that you do not know. 62. You certainly know that the first creation was brought about by the power of Allah. Should you not then reflect and realize that the second creation is also possible and inevitable? 63. Have you considered the seed you sow in the ground? 64. Is it you who cause the crops to grow and flourish, or are We the Grower? 65. Had We willed, We could have turned it into dry chaff before it ripened, and you would be left in wonderment, saying: 66. "Alas, our labors are in vain, we have suffered a great loss." 67. "Moreover, we have been completely deprived of all sustenance!" 68. Have you considered the water you drink? 69. Is it you who bring it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender? 70. Had We willed, We could have made it bitter and salty, unfit for drinking. Why, then, are you not grateful? 71. Have you considered the fire you kindle? 72. Is it you who create and grow its tree, or are We the Creator? 73. We have made it both a reminder of the fire of Hell and a vital blessing for those in the desert, travelers, and all who need it. 74. So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Supreme; and declare that He is far above any defect or having partners! 75. I swear by the positions of the stars and the parts of the Qur'an as they are revealed. 76. And that is indeed a great oath, if you but knew, 77. That this is indeed a most honorable and noble Qur'an. 78. Its original is in a well-guarded Book. 79. None shall touch it except the purified. 80. It is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds, sent down in stages. 81. Do you then look down upon this Divine Word? 82. And instead of giving thanks for the great blessing Allah has given you, do you deny it? 83. When the soul reaches the throat at the moment of death, 84. At that time, you who are with the dying person can do nothing; you only watch in helplessness. 85. We are closer to him than you are, but you cannot see. 86. If you are not to be resurrected and brought to account, and if you are not to be punished; 87. Then bring back that soul if it is leaving, if you are truthful and consistent in your claim! 88. Then, if the deceased is of the "Muqarrabun" (those brought near to Allah), 89. For him there is eternal rest, happiness, beautiful and fragrant provisions, and Gardens of Delight. 90. And if he is of the "people of the right," the fortunate and happy ones, 91. The angels will say to him: "Peace be unto you, O person of the right!" 92. But if he is of those who denied the Qur'an and the Prophet, the erring ones who strayed from the right path, 93. His welcome shall be a feast of boiling water. 94. And after that, he shall be cast into the blazing fire of Hell. 95. Indeed, this is the absolute truth about which there is not the slightest doubt. 96. So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Supreme; and declare that He is far above any defect or having partners!
